Purusha – the Concept of Purusa in Hinduism

The concept of Purusha cannot be understood in independence as it is always related to Prakrti. Purusa is spirit and Prakrti is matter and the union of these two factors results in the visible world. Before creation Purusha and Prakrti lay merged as the Supreme Energy (God in common terms) without separate existence. But when the desire for creation was aroused, this Supreme Spirit divided itself into Prakrti and Purusa. The right half becomes ‘Purusa’ and the left half ‘Prakrti’.Purusha is the male aspect and Prakrti is the female aspect. There are some schools of thought which consider the Supreme Truth to be Purusha, which sets in action the creation. The message of the Upanishads is the life divine, the life of transformed humanity and the life of an illumined earth-consciousness. The Upanishads tell us that the renunciation of desire-life is the fulfilling enjoyment of world-existence. This renunciation is neither self-denial nor self-rejection. This renunciation demands the transcendence of ego, to breathe in freely the life-energy of the soul and yet to live a dynamic and active life in the world, where one can achieve Infinity's Height, Eternity's Delight and Immortality's Light. In the silent recesses of the Upanishadic heart, we see and feel a splendid combination of the soul's spirituality and life's practicality. Its understanding embraces all the foibles of weak humanity. Its universal love is the song of self-offering.Each major Upanishad is a pathfinder in the forest of experience that comprises human life. Each major Upanishad offers us the intuitive knowledge and the inner courage to find our way th…
