Uttarayan in Gujarat – Makar Sankranti

The popular festival of Makar Sankranti is also known Uttarayan in Gujarat. The sun travels from Sagittarius to Capricon (Makara Rasi) and this transition is known as Makar Sankranti. In 2018, the date of Uttarayan in Gujarat is January 14. Uttarayan is the movement of the sun northwards (uttara) from the Tropic of Capricon to Tropic of Cancer. The northwards travel takes about six months and is the daytime of Devas.

The Uttar path of Surya or movement of sun towards north is considered highly auspicious and it is also the path of path to mukti.

In Gujarat, Uttarayan is famous for the kite festival. Kites of different colors and shape the skies during this period. Numerous kite flying competitions are also held during this period.

Walls surrounding Shirdi Sai Baba Idol at Shirdi Temple Adorned with Gold

The four walls surrounding the idol of Shirdi Sai Baba at the world famous ShirdiSaiBabaTemple in Maharashtra have been adorned with gold sheets weighing 50 kg and embossed with pictures of Shirdi Sai Baba. Today, ShirdiSaiBabaTemple is the second richest temple in the country after TirumalaTirupatiVenkateswaraTemple.The sheets mounted over the walls, prepared using about 50 kg gold, 50 kg bronze and about 250 kg copper, have been donated to the temple's trust by a Hyderabad-based businessman Adinarayana Reddy. In 2008, Reddy had donated the golden throne (using 100kg gol) on which the Sai Baba now sits, after his wife Sulochana had a dream in which the saint asked her to get it made.Bangalore-based artist Raja Algar who has embossed the sheets with pictures depicting the saint has been working on it since the past four months. Algar has worked on the designs of many temples including the TirupatiBalajiTemple in Andhra Pradesh.
