Karat Sree Kallanthattu Bhagavathi Temple – Kaliyattam Theyyam Thira Festival

Karat Sree Kallanthattu Bhagavathi temple is located at Kunhimangalam near Ezhilode in Kannur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Kallanthattu Bhagavathy. The annual kaliyattam theyyam thira festival is held for two days in Dhanu Masam – Dhanu 15 and Dhanu 16 (December 31 and January 1).



The important theyyams that can be performed at Karat Sree Kallanthattu Bhagavathi temple Dharma Daivam, Thondachan, Karimchamundi , Nageshwari (Nageni Amma, rare theyyam, egg vazhipadu is well known), Kaalichan, Padamadakki Thamburatti with kids, Thamburatti thira (Valyakkaran of Thamburatti), Vishumoorthi, Gulikan and Kallanthattu Bhagavathi (with one of the longest mudis).

The temple has a separate designated area of Naga worship. Ayiliyam nakshatram in a month if is of importance here. Sankranti in all Malayalam months are important and special pujas and rituals are held. The temple has a chathura sreekovil for the main deity. There are other sreekovils and some deities are worshipped atop square platforms which are exposed to the elements. Certain deities are given space under trees.
