Bijli Mahadev Temple in Kullu in Himachal Pradesh – Special Shravan Amavasya Puja after Lightning Strikes the Shivling

BijliMahadevTemple near Kullu in Himachal Pradesh attracts thousands of visitors during the Shravan Amavasya (No moon day in Sawan month – In 2018, it is on August 11 as per traditional Hindu calendar followed in North India.) It is said that the Shivling worshipped at Bijli Mahadev Mandir gets damaged due to lightning every year in Shravan month – the temple priests then gathers the broken pieces and puts them together using butter. Therefore the name BijliMahadevTemple – Bijli means lightning.

At an altitude of 7,874 feet, the temple is about 25 km from Kullu in Himachal Pradesh and is located on the banks of the BeasRiver.

The popular belief is that the prayers performed on Shravan Amavasya are heard by dead forefathers and they help in fulfilling them.

A local legend has it that the Shivling at the temple captures the powerful energies from the atmosphere and keeps the world safe.

Plan To Ban Elephants Blessing Devotees in Tamil Nadu Temples

Some of the famous temples in Tamil Nadu have elephants in the temple premises that bless the devotees. The devotees in return give money and some people also give fruits, sugarcane, jaggery and bananas along with money. This is an age-old practice and now the wildlife authorities in Tamil Nadu are planning to ban the practice as they feel it is a stress on the animal.Elephants are seen as the living incarnations of Hindu God Ganesha by many Hindus and the blessing them from is considered sacred. But many Hindus don’t realize the torture the poor animals go through.For elephant owners and trainers the poor animals are a source of income. Rig Hiranyakesi Shravani

Rg Hiranyakesi Shravani is the special rituals observed in the Shravan month by some Hindu communities in western parts of India. Rig Hiranyakesi Shravani 2018 date is August 25. Upkarma is performed by some communities on the day. Usually the Rig Hiranyakesi Shravani is performed when the Hasta Nakshatra falls in the Shravana month.

Rig Shukla Yajur Shravani is observed a day earlier or later of Rig Hiranyakesi Shravani.

Please note that Upakarma is performed during different time by different communities. But majority of the communities observe it during the Shravan month.
