Raktha Chamundi theyyam is a ferocious theyyam performed during the annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival in numerous kavu, tharavadu, temples and sacred places in both Kannur and Kasaragod regions of Kerala. As per information, this theyyam is believed to have appeared from the eyes of Goddess Bhagavathy. As per Raktha Chamundi theyyam story, the demon Raktha Beeja was so powerful that millions of demons appeared from a single drop of his blood that fell on earth. It became impossible to defeat him. Rakha Chamundi appeared from the body of Goddess Durga Bhagavathi and she licked away the blood that fell on earth and finally killed the demon and his army.
Raktha Chamundi theyyam is noted for its highly decorated thirumudi. She blesses devotees with peace and prosperity. This theyyam is also worshipped for victory over enemies.
