Cheerumba Nalvar

Cheerumba Nalvar is the combined name given to four deities that are worshipped in the theyyam – thira – kaliyattam kavukal in Kannur and Kasaragod districts of Kerala. The Cheerumba Nalvar include Goddess Cheerumba, Chitharamba, Dandan and Kandakarnan (ദണ്ഡനും, ഘണ്ഡാകർണ്ണനും, ചിതർംബ,  ചീറുമ്പ)

Dandan and Kandakarnan were the children of Shiva and Goddess Parvati. But they adopted demonic ways due to their immeasurable strength and this worried Shiva. Seeing her husband concerned, Goddess Parvati shed tears from her eyes.

The tear that appeared from the right eye was a ferocious Goddess named Chitharamba and the tear that appeared from the left eye transformed into a kind but powerful goddess named Cheerumba.

Seeing the powerful Goddesses, Dandan and Kandakarnan realized that their strength was nothing. This led to them dropping their ego and arrogance. They then worshipped the Goddess for forgiveness. The Goddesses forgave them and the four divine beings together came to be known as Cheerumba Nalvar in Theyyam kavukal.
