Melambara Sree Dharma Sastha Temple – Festival

Melambara Sree Dharma Sastha temple, also known as Ambara Dharmasastha temple, is located at Melampara near Pala in Kottayam district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Ayyappa or Sastha. This is an ancient temple and the shrine observes its annual festival in Kumbham month. Panguni Uthiram (uthram nakshatra in Meena Masam) is an important festival here.

The annual festival is famous for caparisoned elephants with thidambu, venjamaram and muthukuda. The deity is brought out during the festival for ezhunnallathu. Temple art forms, melam and procession are part of the festival. The annual festival ends with arattu.

This is a typical Kerala style temple with sanctum sanctorum in the middle and chuttambalam around it. All the regular features that are part of Kerala temple architecture are present in the shrine including kodimaram and balikallu. There are also separate shrines for upa devatas.
