Story of Nripureshwar Form of Shiva in Ujjain
Legend has it that once Nripur Gana visited the palace of Indra in heaven. Here he happened to witness the sensuous dance of Apsara Urvashi. Nripur was unable to control his passion and he threw flowers at Urvashi.

Urvashi complained about the behavior of Nripur Gana to Kuber. An angry, Kuber cursed Nripur to be born on earth and suffer pains of birth and death.

Nripur Gana then wandered on earth and one day had darshan of Goddess Manasa. She asked him to go to Mahakaal forest and perform prayers to a Shivling in the southern part of the forest.

Nripur performed pujas as told by the Goddess. Shiva was pleased with his devotion and gave him moksha or liberation.

As Nripur Gana offered prayers to the Shivling, it came to be known as Nripureshwar Mahadev.
