Popular Cave Temples In Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand, known for its spiritual and natural beauty, is home to several renowned cave temples. These temples are not only significant for their religious importance but also for their historical and architectural value. 

Gauri udiyar is a cave temple located around 8 km from Bageshwar in Uttarakhand. This large caves shrine is dedicated to Hindu God Shiva. Numerous idols of Shiva are placed in the cave measuring 20 X95 Sq Mts.

The shrine attracts scores of devotees throughout the year.

Special pujas are performed here during Shivratri, Shravan month and the Navratras.

In Shravan month, Kanwarias visit the shrine in large numbers.

  1. Patal Bhuvaneshwar Cave Temple:

  3. Dunagiri Cave Temple:

    • Description: Also known as Dunagiri Devi Temple, it is believed that the Pandavas of Mahabharata performed penance here. The temple is situated in a scenic location, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
  4. Koteshwar Cave Temple:

    • Location: Rudraprayag district
    • Description: Situated on the banks of the Alaknanda River, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple complex includes several small caves that house various idols and shrines. It is believed that Lord Shiva meditated here during his journey to Kedarnath.

    • Description: This cave temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is known for its unique feature where water droplets continuously fall on the Shivalinga from the cave's ceiling. The temple is located along the banks of the Tons River and is a popular pilgrimage site.
  6. Vashishta Cave:

    • Location: Near Rishikesh
    • Description: Named after Sage Vashishta, this ancient cave is a popular spot for meditation and spiritual retreats. It is believed that Sage Vashishta meditated here, and the cave offers a peaceful and serene environment along the banks of the Ganges River.
