Story of Kutumbeshwar Mahadev form of Shiva in Ujjain
During the churning of ocean by Asuras and Devas, the deadly
poison Halhala that appeared as a result was consumed by Shiva to save the world.
He later deposited the poison in Shipra River.
Shipra River deposited the poison in the Kameshwar Shivling
at Mahakaal Vana (ancient name of Ujjain).
The Shivling started emitting poison and killed Shiva
devotees.
When Shiva came to know about this, he brought back to life
the dead Shiva devotees.
He also blessed the Shivling and stated that from today
onwards the Shivling will grant good health and healthy off springs.
As prayers offered here helps in expanding the family, the
Shivling came to be known as Kutumbeshwar Mahadev.
