After their marriage, Shiva and Goddess Parvati resided at
the Mandiranchal Mountain. Nandi was asked to guard the entrance and not to let
anyone inside.
The lovemaking of the divine couple continued for years.
Devas were worried that the child that will result from the copulation will
destroy the world.
So they decided to approach Shiva and find a solution.
When the Devas reached the Mandiranchal Mountain, Nandi did
not let them inside.
Agni, the fire god, then took the form of a swan, went
inside, and told Shiva that Devas were waiting for him outside.
Shiva met the Devas and promised him that there will be no
harm to the world.
But Shiva was angry at Nandi for his negligence. He cursed
Nandi to live on earth.
Devas who felt sorry for Nandi and asked him to offer
prayers to a Shivling near the Nagachandreshwar Temple at Mahakaal Vana.
Nandi performed intense austerities and regained his
previous status. As Nandi got his wish fulfilled, the Shivling came to be known
as Pratihareshwar Mahadev.
