It is believed that mere darshan of this form of Shiva will wipe out all sins of past life.

It is also believed that the Shivling during ancient times was located at the confluence of Shipra River, Patal Ganga and Neel Gang.

Story of Sangameshwar Mahadev
Once there lived a king name Subahu. He ruled the Kaling region. He had a wife named Vishalakshi. The couple lived happily. But the king was constantly troubled by a severe headache in the afternoon.
Doctors and medicines failed to find a proper cure.

Noticing that the queen was extremely sad, the king revealed to her that his headache is the result of evil performed during previous birth.

The queen then wanted to know what evil the king had performed during his previous births.

The king told her that he would narrate her story at Avantikapuri (modern Ujjain).

The king stayed at the confluence of Shipra River, Patal Ganga and Neel Ganga in Avantika. The Shivling that is located here is known as Sangameshwar.

The next day morning after offering prayers to Sangameshwar, the king narrated the story of his previous birth. In one of his birth, he followed Adharma and the queen was his accomplice. They had a son who too did not follow dharma. But later in life they repented and due to this they were born as animals near Shipra River.

In that birth, a hunter killed them near Sangameshwar Mahadev.

As they had witnessed Sangameshwar before death, they were born as husband and wife in this birth.
The king then told the queen that he would not return and want to stay at   Sangameshwar Mahadev. The queen too decided to stay back.

It is believed that those couple who will have darshan of Sangameshwar Mahadev will be husband and wife in next life too.
