Vinayaka Chaturthi in Kerala in 2023 – Ganesh Chaturthi Festival in Kerala in 2023

Ganesh Chaturthi is the birthday of Ganesha, the elephant-headed Hindu God. Ganapati or Vinayaka is one of the most popular representations of Supreme Truth in Hinduism. Vinayaka Chaturthi 2023 date in Kerala is on August 20. It is believed that Ganapathi was born on the Ganesh Chaturthi day.

Note - Ganesh Chaturthi in Other parts of India is on September 19.

This date difference is because Vinayaka Chaturthi in Kerala is observed on the Shukla Paksha Chaturthi tithi (4th day during the waxing phase of moon) in Chinga Masam. This corresponds to Bhadrapad Shukla Paksha Chaturthi in other regions.

Vinayaka Chaturthi is observed on the same day in Kerala and other regions when there is no Adhika Masa in Lunar Calendars followed in other regions.

When there is an Adhika Masa, or extra month, in calendars followed in most regions in India, there is a difference in date. Adhika Masa is not present in Kerala Malayalam calendars as it is a solar calendar. Thus once in 3 years there is a difference of date in Malayalam calendar and other Hindu calendars in observing Ganesh Chaturthi.

Vinayaka Chaturthi is observed for 10 days in certain regions in Kerala. Huge murtis of Ganesha are prepared and worshipped in homes and in public places.

Some of the famous Ganapati temples in Kerala have special rituals on the day like the Madhur Ganapathi Temple, Pazhavangadi Ganapathy Temple and Kottarakkara Ganapathy Temple. One of the famous Ganesh Chaturthi festival is observed at Suryakaladi Mana at Nattassery in Kottayam.
