Poothana Moksham Parayanam – For Good Health Of Children – Reading Poothana Lord Krishna Episode

Poothana Moksham Parayanam is the reading of the episode related to the demon Poothana and Hindu God Krishna from the Srimad Bhagavata Purana or the Bhagavatham. It is believed that the reading of the chapter will help in curing illness or diseases of children. Parents usually read the chapter and the child listens to it. After this they make offerings to Lord Ganesha and Krishna.

Demon Puthana tried to kill Gopal Krishna (Child form of Krishna) by rubbing poison on her breasts. Little Krishna drank the poisoned milk from the breast but it had no effect on him. Krishna continued drinking the milk and finally blood started oozing out of Puthana’s breast and she was finally killed.

Puthana in her earlier birth was a pious lady and had become demon as a result of a curse. By getting killed by Krishna she was relieved of the curse and she attained Moksha.

There is a belief among many Hindu communities that reading this episode which contains the leela (divine play) of Krishna will help in curing illness of children.

Apart from reading the episode from the Srimad Bhagavad Purana, parents also make sweet offerings to Hindu God Krishna and Ganesha in temples or at home.
