Vasubaras is the first day of Diwali celebrations in Maharashtra . It is observed on the 12th day of the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of moon) of Ashwin month as per traditional Marathi calendar. Vasubaras 2012 date is November 10. Vasubaras is dedicated to the worship of the cow.
Women worship cows with a calf on the day. Symbolically, the cow represents motherhood.
In rural India , for thousands of families cow is the sole economic source. Keeping this in mind married women offer special pujas for the well being of cows.
