Brahmasutra is a treatise on the nature of Ultimate Reality and Truth (Brahman) as propounded by the Upanishads. Brahmasutra is traditionally ascribed to Badarayana who is identified by some scholars with Sage Vyasa.
Brahmasutra and metaphysics – Brahman is the unity from
which the world of objects and the individual souls appear. It is the origin,
sustenance and the goal of the world and our life in it. It is both the
material and efficient cause of the world. It does not need any material or
instrument outside it to shape the creation.
It is, as the source of the world, possessed of all
perfections. It is the inner law and the governor of all creation. It is all
wisdom and all power. It is the cosmic light, the elan vital of all. It dwells
in the innermost being of man, in his heart. It is absolute spirit, not a
material power. It creates the world, enters into it as its inner ruler.
Because of its presence inside everything, things undergo orderly development
and evolve into many forms.
Brahman, says Badarayana, creates the world out of itself as
the clay becomes a pot or gold becomes an ornament. The role of the potter or
of the goldsmith is played by Brahman itself in the creation.
