The Boon to Vakrasura
The story begins with a demon named Vakrasura, who performed severe penance to appease Lord Shiva. Pleased with Vakrasura's dedication and devotion, Shiva granted him a boon of immortality. Empowered by this boon, Vakrasura grew arrogant and began to torment the Devas (gods).
Despite his omnipotence, Shiva was bound by his own boon and could not directly intervene to stop Vakrasura's tyranny. In his distress, Shiva turned to Lord Vishnu for assistance.
Vishnu's Intervention
Vishnu, taking the form of Varadaraja, engaged Vakrasura in battle. He wielded his divine weapon, the Sudarshana Chakra, against the demon. However, Vakrasura had another advantage: every drop of his blood that touched the ground spawned new demons. This phenomenon made it nearly impossible to defeat him, as the battlefield was continuously replenished with more demons.
The Role of Goddess Kali
To counteract this, Goddess Kali was summoned. With her ferocious and all-encompassing presence, Kali drank the blood of Vakrasura as it spilled, preventing it from hitting the ground and generating more demons. This tactic proved effective, and eventually, Vakrasura was overcome and killed by Vishnu.
The Wrath of Dunmukhi
The story, however, does not end with the death of Vakrasura. His sister, Dunmukhi, who was pregnant at the time, was filled with rage and sought revenge for her brother's death. She posed a new threat, compelling Kali to act once more.
In a dramatic and ruthless act, Kali extracted the fetus from Dunmukhi to prevent it from being born, thereby eliminating a future threat. Although killing a child in the womb was considered a sin, Kali's actions were driven by the necessity to protect the world from another demon. She wore the fetus as an earring, symbolizing her victory and dominance.
Vakrakali Amman
Due to her role in the slaying of Vakrasura and his sister, Goddess Kali came to be known as Vakrakali or Vakrakali Amman. This name signifies her association with Vakrasura and the circumstances surrounding his defeat.
