The Mudichur Vidyambigai Samedha Bheemeshwara Temple, also known as the Marriage Temple, holds a profound significance for those seeking blessings for successful marriages in Tamil Nadu. The temple's history dates back over 1300 years to the devotion of a man named Kameshwaran, a devout follower of Lord Shiva who discovered a sacred Shivalingam in the village. His love story intertwines with Vasuki, the adopted daughter of a man named Vishwam, who initially opposed their union.
Kameshwaran and Vasuki prayed fervently to Lord Shiva to
bless their marriage. Their prayers were answered when Lord Shiva, disguised as
Parameshwaran, the temple's priest, intervened. Vishwam, unable to resist the
divine command, brought the couple to the temple where they were married in the
presence of Lord Shiva and Parvathi.
As a result of this divine union, the village where the
wedding took place came to be known as Manamudicha Nallur, which eventually
evolved into Mudichur. The Shivalingam worshipped by Kameshwaran, initially
called Parameshwaran, became known as Bheemeshwara, honoring Lord Shiva's
intervention in their marriage. The Goddess worshipped in the temple is
Vidyambigai, a manifestation of the three devis.
The Mudichur Vidyambigai Samedha Bheemeshwar Temple is not
only a place of marriage blessings but also hosts various other deities,
including Sridevi Bhoodevi Samedha Damodhara Perumal, Vinayaka, Muruga,
Navgraha, Chandikeshwara, Goddess Durga, Bhairava, Garuda, Hanuman, Chandra,
and Aalavatta Amman.
The temple's significance is further highlighted during the
Karthigai Deepam festival, a major celebration observed with great enthusiasm
by devotees. Additionally, the tradition of tying yellow threads around the
temple's Sanctum Sanctorum symbolizes prayers for successful marriage
proposals, with couples returning after marriage to offer gratitude to the
divine for fulfilling their wishes.
