The Dadhimati Mata Temple, situated in Goth Manglod, Rajasthan, boasts a rich history dating back to the 7th century CE. There are many tales associated with this ancient temple. A prominent story revolves around Dadhimati, believed to be the sister of the revered sage Dadhichi. The temple is also famous for a hanging pillar.
In the ancient times, the region was plagued by the
formidable Vikatasur Demon, who wreaked havoc and seemed invincible due to
powerful boons. The only way to defeat him was through a woman who had not been
born from a womb and had only been on Earth for a single day. According to the
legend, Dadhimati emerged from the sky on Magh Shukla Paksha Saptami, the
seventh day of the waxing moon in the Magh month, following a significant
celestial churning. On Magh Shukla Paksha Ashtami, the eighth day of the waxing
moon in Magh month, also known as Jaya Ashtami, Dadhimati successfully
vanquished the demon Vikatasur in Dadhi Sagar. It's believed that Dadhimati is
an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi.
The Dadhimati Mata Temple holds a special place for Dadhich Brahmins, as well as the Dantuslia (Jat gotra) and Gelda (Baniya gotra) communities, considering Dadhimati as their Kuldevi and Kul Mata. The temple houses some of the oldest depictions of Devi Mahatmya, adding to its historical and religious significance.
One remarkable aspect of the temple is the naturally formed
murti (idol) of the Goddess, believed to have emerged from underneath. This
adds a touch of divine mystique to the sanctum of the temple.
