Nallakandy Madappura Temple – Theyyam Kaliyattam Thira Festival

Nallakandy Madappura temple is located at Nareekamvally in Keezhathur in Kannur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Muthappan and other related deities worshipped in kavu and tharavadu in the region. The annual theyyam – kaliyattam festival in the temple is held for two days in Malayalam Vrishickam Masam – December first week.

The important theyyams that are part of the annual kaliyattam – thira festival at Nareekamvally Nallakandy Madappura temple are Muthappan, Gulikan theyyam, Thiruvappana, Kuttichathan theyyam, Manathana Kali theyyam, Elladathu Bhagavathy theyyam, Bappooran, Ankakkarantheyyam and Malakkari theyyam.

The temple has a main chathura sreekovil for the main deity. Other deities that are popularly worshipped in tharavadu, kavu and temples in Kannur region are worshipped in square platforms and small sreekovil. Yearly Vishu and monthly Sankranti days are important in the temple. This is a small privately maintained temple.
