Mathamangalam Thavidisseri Purakunnu Sree Vallarkulangara Bhagavathy Temple – Kaliyattam Theyyam Festival

Mathamangalam Thavidisseri Purakunnu Sree Vallarkulangara Bhagavathy temple is located at Mathamangalam in Kannur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Vallarkulangara Bhagavathy and other popular deities worshipped in kavu and tharavadu in the region. The annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival is held for a couple of days in Vrischika Masam (November – December).

The important theyyam that can be witnessed at Mathamangalam Thavidisseri Purakunnu Sree Vallarkulangara Bhagavathy temple is the Vallarkulangara Bhagavathy theyyam.

The temple has a chathura sreekovil (square sanctum sanctorum) for the main deity. The walls and roof of the shrine are decorated with traditional motifs. There are other smaller sanctums for other deities. Some deities are worshipped atop small square platforms and under trees. The temple performs special pujas and rituals on Sankranti day.
