Kodallur Sree Palaprathu Kavu Bhagavathi Temple – Theyyam Thira Kaliyattam Festival

Kodallur Sree Palaprathu Kavu Bhagavathi temple is located on the Parassinikkadavu Kodallur Canal Road at Kodallur in Kannur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Bhagavathi, Gulikan and other deities commonly worshipped in the region. The annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival is held for six days in Malayalam Kumbha Masam – Kumbham 5 to Kumbham 10 (February 17 to Feb 22).

The important theyyams that can be witnessed in Kodallur Sree Palaprathu Kavu Bhagavathi temple are Ilamkolam theyyam, Karan theyyam, Thekkan Gulikan theyyam, Veeran theyyam, Marakalathamma theyyam, Nagakanni theyyam and Puthiya Bhagavathy theyyam.


Mappila Porot is performed during the annual theyyam period.

This is a small temple with small chathura sreekovils (square sanctum sanctorum) for the main deities. The walls and roof of the shrine are decorated with traditional temple motifs. Other deities worshipped in the temple can be found atop small square platforms which are exposed to elements. Some deities are worshipped under trees. There are also other smaller sreekovils. Sankranti in every Malayalam month is of great importance here.
