Appakkadavu Muthappan Temple – Kaliyattam Theyyam Thira Festival

Appakkadavu Muthappan temple is located on the Koodali - Thandappuram- Chekkikulam Road at Appakkadav near Chakkarakkal in Kannur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Muthappan. The annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival is held for two days in Malayalam Vrischika Masam – Vrischikam 27 and Vrischikam 28 (December 13 and December 14).

The important theyyams that can be witnessed at Appakkadavu Muthappan temple are Muthappan and Thiruvappana.

This is a typical Kerala style temple seen through out the Kannur region. The main deity is worshipped in a traditional chathura sreekovil (square sanctum sanctorum). There are other smaller sreekovils for other deities. Some deities are worshipped atop square platform and under trees. Important pujas and rituals are performed on Sankranti day as per traditional Malayala Masam.
