Sree Poonkavu temple is located at Poomkavu near Kadambur in Kannur district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Raktha Chamundeshwari. The annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival is held first for three days in February 16, 17, 18 (Kumbham 4 to Kumbham 6) and then again from April 6 to April 9 (Meenam 23 to Meenam 26).
The important theyyams that can be witnessed at Sree Poonkavu temple are Sasthappan theyyam, Bhairavan theyyam, Karuvaal theyyam, Porkali Bhagavathi theyyam, Rakta Chamundeshwari theyyam, Thekkan Gulikan, Vishnumoorthi theyyam and Uchitta theyyam.
This is a small shrine with a square sanctum sanctorum
(chathura sreekovil) for the main deities. Other deities are worshipped in
smaller chathura sreekovil. Some deities are worshiped atop raised square
platforms. Certain deities are worshiped under trees. Sankranti in every Malayalam
month is of significance here.
