Manakkattu Sree Vareekara Bhagavathi Temple – Theyyam – Kaliyattam Festival

Manakkattu Sree Vareekara Bhagavathi temple is located on the Kannankai - Elambachi Road, Poroppad, South Thrikkaripur in Kasaragod district, Kerala. The shrine is dedicated to Goddess Vareekara Bhagavathi (Bhadrakali who had just annihilated Darikasura). The annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival is held for four days in Malayalam Kumbha Masam – Kumbham 21 to Kumbham 24 (March 5 to March 8).

This is a small temple with a square sanctum sanctorum – chathura sreekovil. The roof of the sreekovil is decorated with traditional Hindu religious motifs. Some deities are worshipped on raised square platforms which are exposed to sun and rain. Some deities are worshipped under tree. Sankranti in a Malayalam masam is of great importance here. Vishu is another important festival.

The important theyyams that can be witnessed at Manakkattu Sree Vareekara Bhagavathi temple are Ankakkulangara Bhagavathy, Kannikkoru Makan, Madayil Chamundi, Raktha Chamundi, Varekkara Bhagavathi and Vishnumoorthi theyyam.
