Rakthajathan is a rare theyyam seen during the annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival in Kannur and Kasaragod regions of Kerala. As per information, this is a male theyyam and is believed to be Veerabhadra. As per Rakthajathan story, he appeared when Shiva in anger threw a strand of his hair down on earth. Shiva was angry on hearing the news about the death of Sati at Daksha yajna. Rakthajathan and numerous other deities that was produced by an angry Shiva entered the Daksha yajna and created havoc.
Shiva later blessed Rakthajathan and send him over to earth to protect Dharma. He joined forces with the ruler of Nediyiruppu kingdom and defeated eight rulers of Alladam swaroopam who were spreading evil on earth.
After defeating the bad rulers one earth, Rakthajathan took
his aroodam in the kingdom along with Mulanoor Bhagavathy.
