Kunnaru Kallara Tharavad Temple – Theyyam – Kaliyattam Festival

Kunnaru Kallara Tharavad temple is located at Kunnaru near Payyanur in Kannur district, Kerala. This is an ancient tharavadu temple and the deities are those that are worshipped in the region especially in tharavadu and kavukal. The annual Kaliyattam Thira – Theyyam festival in the temple is held for two days in Malayalam Kumbha Masam – Kumbham 26 and Kumbham 27 – March 10 and March 11.

The rituals and pujas in the temple are performed in a designated area in the Tharavadu. There is a rectangular sanctum with two doors for two deities. The important pujas are performed on Sankranti days as per Malayalam calendar and on Vishu in April.

The important theyyams that are part of the annual Thira – Kaliyattam festival are Gulikan theyyam, Kandaner Kelan theyyam, Kudiveeran theyyam, Kundor Chamundi theyyam, Vayanattu Kulavan theyyam and Vishnumoorthy theyyam.
