Puliyoor Kali Theyyam (പുലിയൂർ കാളി തെയ്യം) is a unique and famous theyyam part of the annual Thira – Theyyam – Kaliyattam festival mainly in Kannur and Kasaragod districts in Kerala. As per information, this theyyam is associated with Shiva and Goddess Parvati taking the form of tiger and tigress respectively. As per the Puliyoor Kali Theyyam story, Puliyoor Kali is the daughter of Shiva and Goddess Parvati in the form of tiger and tigress.
Once, Shiva and Goddess Parvati were traveling through the Thullor Forest. Here they happened to see a tiger mating with a female tiger. Shiva and Parvati had amorous feelings and they took the form of Pulikandan and Pulikarinkali (Pullikarinkali) (പുലികണ്ടനും പുലികരിങ്കാളി (പുള്ളികരിങ്കാളി)).
It is believed that Puli Karinkali made a big hole below
Thathenar rock (താതേനാര്‍ കല്ലിന്റെ തായ്മടയില്‍) and gave birth to five
children – four males and one female. As per some beliefs she gave birth to
five male children.
The female child is popularly known as Puliyoor Kali. The
five male children were known as Kandapuli, Kala Puli, Marapuli, Pulimaruthan
and Puliyoor Kannan.
This theyyam is known to depict various angry postures. When both Mother (Pulikarinkali) and Daughter (Puliyoor Kali) are performed together, mother is known as Valiya Thamburatti and daughter is known as Cheriya Thamburatti.
- പുലികണ്ടന്റെയും (ശിവന്‍), പുള്ളികരിങ്കാളി (പാര്‍വതി)യുടെയും മകളായ പെണ്പുലിയാണ് പുലിയൂര്‍ കാളി.
- വളരെയധികം രൌദ്രഭാവമുള്ള തെയ്യമാണിത്.
- സാധാരണയായി ഒട്ടു മിക്ക ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിലും പുലിയൂര്‍ കാളി തെയ്യത്തെ ഉപദേവത സ്ഥാനത്ത് ഒറ്റയ്ക്ക് കെട്ടിയാടാറുണ്ട്.
- ചിലയിടങ്ങളില്‍ അമ്മയും മകളുമായി പുള്ളികരിങ്കാളിയെയും പുലിയൂര്‍ കാളിയെയും ഒന്നിച്ചു കെട്ടിയാടിക്കാറുണ്ട്. ഇതില്‍ അമ്മ തെയ്യം(പുള്ളികരിങ്കാളി) വലിയ തമ്പുരാട്ടി എന്നും മകള്‍ തെയ്യം (പുലിയൂര്‍ കാളി) ചെറിയ തമ്പുരാട്ടി എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.
- ചിലയിടങ്ങളില്‍ പുലിയൂര്‍ കണ്ണനും, പുലിയൂര്‍ കാളിയും മാത്രം കോലമുണ്ട്.
- പുലിയൂര്‍ കാളിയുടെ നൃത്തചുവടുകള്‍ വളരെ മനോഹരമാണ് ആ തിരുനൃത്തം കാണുന്നത് പോലെ തന്നെ ആസ്വാദ്യകാരമാണ് വട്ടമുടി വെച്ചുള്ള ദേവിയുടെ നിര്ത്താ തെയുള്ള കറക്കവും.
- തിരുമുടി നിലത്ത് മുട്ടിക്കുന്ന രീതിയിലുള്ള തിരുമുടി വണക്കവും നയനാനന്ദകരമാണ്‌.
- വണ്ണാന്‍ സമുദായക്കാരാണ് ഈ തെയ്യവും കെട്ടിയാടുന്നത്‌.
