Puli Chekavan Theyyam – Story – Information

Puli Chekavan theyyam is a rare theyyam seen especially in Kasaragod region during the annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival. As per information, this theyyam is associated with Puli or tiger (wild animal belonging to the cat family). As per Puli Chekavan theyyam story, a person who lived during the ancient times got killed while fighting a tiger. Through his selflessness and sacrifice he saved the people of the region and he became a daivakkaru. A theyyam is performed annually in honor of his divine sacrifice.

The theyyam does perform some ferocious actions.

Puli Chekavan theyyam is worshipped to overcome fear and for protection of livestock.

Puli Chekavan theyyam is annually performed at Padi Pullikarinkali Devasthanam temple and at Kasargod Kuttikkol Thamburatti Bhagavathi Temple (Feb 23 to Feb 26).
