Pulapottan theyyam a rare theyyam performed during the theyyam, thira, kaliyattam festival in Kannur and Kasaragod regions of Kerala. As per information, this is the theyyam of a person who boldly questioned the caste hierarchy and other social inequalities and is associated with the Pulaya community. The story of Pulapottan theyyam is similar to Chandala and Adi Shankaracharya story. The original name of Pottan was Alangaran. He was a Pulaya. It is said that for seeing what he was not supposed to see and hearing what he was not supposed to hear, his eyes were blinded and ears were pulled out. He was also forcibly made dumb for talking what he was not supposed to talk. He was teased Pulapottan after he was mutilated. Pulapottan means one who cannot hear and talk.
Alangaran, his wife Sundari and friend Kannadan fight against social evils and caste related atrocities. They instigate lower caste people against the upper class. This leads to constant fight between Alangara and upper class.
During this time Adi Shankaracharya gave prominence to his
mother and decide to build a shrine for her. This was objected by the
male-dominated Brahmin community. When mother of Adi Shankaracharya died, it
was Alangaran who helped with the cremation.
It is said that when Adi Shankaracharya was heading towards
Sarvajna Peedam, Alangaran and his family came from the opposite side. The Guru
asked him to move away. To this Alangaran asked if the same blood is flowing in
both of us where is the difference between us. Adi Shankaracharya realized his
foolishness and made Alangaran his Guru.

പുലയര്‍ കെട്ടുന്ന പൊട്ടന്‍ തെയ്യമാണ്‌ പുലപ്പൊട്ടന്‍. പൊട്ടന്‍ തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ കഥ തന്നെയാണ് ഈ തെയ്യത്തിനും.
പുലപ്പൊട്ടന്‍ തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ ഉരിയാട്ട് വിശേഷങ്ങളിലേക്ക് ഒന്ന് കണ്ണോടിക്കാം. തീയില്‍ കിടന്നു പൊട്ടി പൊട്ടി ചിരിക്കുന്ന പൊട്ടന്‍ സ്വന്തം കൂട്ടരേ വിളിച്ചു ചോദിക്കും ‘ഹ ഹ ഹ കുരിക്കളെ, ഏ കുരിക്കളെ, കണ്ട്വാ പൊത്തന (പൊട്ടനെ) കണ്ട്വാ ‘ഹ ഹ ഹ തണ്ടേ (തീയ്യാ) ഏ തണ്ടേ ഇങ്ങരുത്ത് വാ… ഹ ഹ ഹ എന്ത്ന്നാ ഇത്. വായിപ്പൊതി കെട്ടിയ ഭരണി പോലെ ഉണ്ടല്ലോ (തലയില്‍ കെട്ടും കുടവയറും) ങ്ങ്ഹാ പൊട്ടന്‍ കളിക്ക് പൊരുളെട്ടാണ്. അന്ന് ചൊവ്വര്ക്ക് (ബ്രാഹ്മണനായ ശ്രീ ശങ്കരാചാര്യര്ക്ക്) ഒങ്കാരാ സ്വരൂപന്‍ കൈലാസ വാസി കാട്ടിക്കൊടുത്ത രൂപം കണ്ട്വാ കണ്ണുമീച്ചു (മിഴിച്ചു) കണ്ട്വാ ഹ ഹ ഹ ഈ രൂപത്തിലാണ് കേള്‍വിക്കാരില്‍ പരിഹാസം ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്ന വിധത്തില്‍ പുലപ്പൊട്ടന്‍ ഉരിയാടുന്നത്. ഈ തെയ്യം മുഖപ്പാളയാണ് അണിയുക.
