Police theyyam is a rare theyyam performed during the annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival in Kannur and Kasaragod districts of Kerala. As per information, this theyyam is performed along with Karichamundi theyyam. As per Police theyyam story, once the Kari Karnavar of Padannakkadu Panookku Thayathu Tharavadu went to see the Karichamundi Kaliyattam at Edacheri Alil. The Karnavar prayed to Kari Chamundi that she should appear in his tharavadu and perform the kaliyattam.
Kari Chamundi Devi accepted the invitation of the Karnavar and both started their journey towards Padannakkadu Panookku Thayathu Tharavadu. During the journey they happened to witness a battle between The Nairs of Kola Swaroopam and Nairs of Alladam Swaroopam. A policeman who was mortally wounded in the battle was given water by the Kari Karnavar. The policeman died soon. When the Karnavar returned back to his home he felt the presence of policeman along with Kari Chamundi. From that day onwards, the theyyam of Karichamundi and policeman is performed at Padannakkadu Panookku Thayathu Tharavadu.
പടന്നക്കാട് പാനൂക്ക് തായത്ത് തറവാട്ടിലാണ് ‘പോലീസ് തെയ്യം’ കെട്ടിയാടുന്നത്‌. പണ്ട് ഈ തറവാട്ടിലെ കാരി കാരണവര്‍ എടച്ചേരി ആലില്‍ കരിഞ്ചാമുണ്ടിയുടെ കളിയാട്ടം കാണാനെത്തി. തന്റെ തറവാട്ടിലും ദേവിയുടെ കളിയാട്ടം കെട്ടിയാടണമെന്നു കരിഞ്ചാമുണ്ടിയോട് കാരണവര്‍ അപേക്ഷിച്ചു.
കാരണവരും ദേവിയും തറവാട്ടിലേക്കുള്ള യാത്രക്കിടയില്‍ കോല സ്വരൂപത്തെ നായന്മാരും അള്ളടം സ്വരൂപത്തെ നായന്മാരും തമ്മില്‍ യുദ്ധം നടക്കുന്നത് കാണാനിടയായി. വെട്ടേറ്റ് നിലത്ത് വീണു പിടയുന്ന ഒരു പോലീസ് കാരന് കാരണവര്‍ മടിയില്‍ കിടത്തി വെള്ളം നല്കി. വൈകാതെ പോലീസുകാരന്‍ മരിച്ചു. തറവാട്ടില്‍ തിരിച്ചെത്തിയ കാരണവര്ക്ക് കരിഞ്ചാമുണ്ടിയുടെയും പോലീസ് തെയ്യത്തിന്റെയും സാന്നിധ്യം അനുഭവപ്പെട്ടു. അതിനു ശേഷമാണു തറവാട്ടില്‍ കരിഞ്ചാമുണ്ടിയുടെയും പോലീസിന്റെയും തെയ്യം കെട്ടിയാടാന്‍ തുടങ്ങിയതെന്നാണ് ഐതിഹ്യം.
