Perumpuzhayachan theyyam is an interesting theyyam performed in few temples, sacred places, tharavadu and kavu in Kannur and Kasaragod regions of Kerala. As per information, this theyyam is a deity worshipped by the Valluva community. As per Perumpuzhayachan story, a couple of Vaduva or Valluva did not have any children. They performed intense Shiva bhajana (as per some accounts intense Vishnu bhajana) and they received a boon that they will give birth to a courageous child. He will leave his house and go and settle in Malanadu. The boon also mentioned that the child will be a god.
വള്ളുവ സമുദായക്കാരുടെ പ്രധാന ആരാധനാ ദേവതയാണ് വൈഷ്ണവാംശ മൂര്ത്തിായായ പെരുമ്പഴയച്ചന്‍ തെയ്യം. വടുവ (വള്ളുവ) തറവാട്ടിലെ ദമ്പതിമാരായ കങ്കാള ദേവനും വാരിക്കാ ദേവിയും കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങളില്ലാതെ ശിവ ഭജനം വഴി (വിഷ്ണുവിനെ ഭജിച്ചത് വഴി എന്നും അഭിപ്രായമുണ്ട്) ഒരു വരം ലഭിച്ചുവെന്നും അത് പ്രകാരം അവര്ക്ക്ന ഒരു വീരസന്താനം ജനിക്കുമെന്നും സ്വദേശം വിട്ട് മലനാട്ടില്‍ പോയി ആ സന്താനം ഒരു പരദേവതയായി തീരുമെന്നായിരുന്നു വരം.
അത് പ്രകാരം പിറന്ന മകനെ അവര്‍ വിദ്യകള്‍ പഠിപ്പിച്ചു.
The boy was given good education and once he took permission
from his parents to go on a business journey with the help of his uncle Vaduva
Chatti. The boy started journey with the goods provided by his uncle. He was accompanied
by his friends. After visiting several places, they reached Tirunelli. Here
they paid tax to Thayale Perumal. But they did not pay tax to Meethale Perumal.
An angry Perumal used magic and converted all the white bulls in white stones,
brown bulls into brown stones, black bulls into black stone and converted all
the other goods into ash. All the six people contracted uncurable diseases.
The boy ran to an unknown road. He died at Perumpuzhayil. The
boy became a deity and Daviakkaru and came to be known as Perumpuzhayachan.
ഒരിക്കല്‍ അമ്മാവനായ വടുവ ചെട്ടിയെ കണ്ടു കച്ചവടത്തിന് പോകാനുള്ള തന്റെ ആഗ്രഹം പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ച കുട്ടി അമ്മാവന്‍ നല്കിഠയ എരുതുകളുമായി ചങ്ങാതിമാരുടെ കൂടെ പല നാടുകള്‍ ചുറ്റി തിരുനെല്ലിയില്‍ എത്തുന്നു. ചരക്കുകള്‍ ഇറക്കി വെച്ച് വിശ്രമിച്ച ഇവര്‍ തായലെ പെരുമാള്ക്ക് വഴിച്ചുങ്കം കൊടുത്തുവെങ്കിലും മീത്തലെ പെരുമാള്ക്ക്ാ ചുങ്കം നല്കാ.ത്തതിനാല്‍ പെരുമാള്‍ ദ്വേഷ്യപ്പെടുകയും തന്റെ മാന്ത്രിക ശക്തി കൊണ്ട് എരുതുകളെയെല്ലാം കരിങ്കല്‍ കല്ലുകളായി മാറ്റുകയും ചെയ്തു. വെള്ളക്കാളകള്‍ വെങ്കല്ലായും, ചെമ്പന്‍ കാളകള്‍ ചെങ്കല്ലായും കരിംകാളകള്‍ കരിങ്കല്ലായും മാറി. ചരക്കെല്ലാം ചാര്യമായി. സംഘത്തിലെ ആറു പേരും ആപത്തില്‍ പെട്ടു. മാരിപ്പനിയും പെരുന്തലക്കുത്തും പിടിപ്പെട്ടു വായിലും മൂക്കിലും ചോര വാര്ന്നുയ. ദിക്കും ദേശവുമറിയാതെ പരസ്പ്പരംഅകന്ന് മരണമടഞ്ഞു. കല്ലറ കേറിയവന്‍ കല്ലറയച്ചനും, മണിക്കട കേറിയവന്‍ മണിക്കടയച്ചനും, പനക്കട തീണ്ടിയവന്‍ പനക്കടയച്ചനും, മലവഴിക്ക് പോയവന്‍ മലവഴിയച്ചനും, മര്മ്മി കാണ്ഡം പോയവന്‍ മര്മ്മൊാഴിയച്ചനും ആയി മാറി. പെരിയ (വഴി) പിഴച്ച വടുവ ചെട്ടിയുടെ മരുമകന്‍ പെരുമ്പുഴയില്‍ (പെരുമ്പയില്‍) ഇറങ്ങി മരണമടഞ്ഞു. അങ്ങിനെ വള്ളുവന്മാ്ര്‍ കണ്ടെത്തി ഒരു ദേവതയായി മാറി, പെരുമ്പുഴയച്ചന്‍ എന്നറിയപ്പെട്ടു.
“പെരിയ പിഴച്ചു പെരുമ്പുഴയില്‍ വീണോനല്ലോ പെരുമ്പുഴയച്ചന്‍”
എന്നാണു ഐതിഹ്യം.
Yet another story suggests that the boy was denied
opportunity to do business which was the profession of his family. The family
members said that he was young and did not know how to do business. But the boy
did business on his own and got a huge profit.
He used his magical powers to convert sand and stones into
food items. But one day while returning at night after business, he had a
severe headache. He lost his torch and fell into a river (Perumbuzha river) and
died. A fisherman caught the dead body in his net. The family of the boy
started experiencing several difficulties. Astrologers later revealed that the
boy was not a normal human being but a deity that came to protect the family. Thus
the boy became Perumpuzhayachan and the family deity of Valluvar. The boy was
given a theyyam and is performed annually to get his blessings.
എന്നാല്‍ ഇതില്‍ നിന്ന് അല്പ്പംണ വിത്യസ്തമായി ഒരു കഥയുണ്ട്. ചെറുപ്പത്തിലെ സകല വിദ്യകളും പഠിച്ചെടുത്ത ദേവന്‍ കച്ചവടക്കാരായ കാരണവര്‍ പോകുമ്പോള്‍ അവരുടെ കൂടെ കച്ചവടത്തിനു പോകാന്‍ വാശിപിടിക്കുകയും നിനക്ക് കച്ചവടം ചെയ്യാന്‍ അറിയില്ലെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു അവര്‍ കൂട്ടാതിരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. എന്നാല്‍ അവര്‍ അറിയാതെ അവരെ പിന്തുടര്ന്നച ദേവന്‍ സ്വന്തമായി കച്ചവടം നടത്തി പ്രശസ്തനാവുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.
ആദ്യം കാലി കച്ചവടം ചെയ്ത ദേവന്‍ പിന്നീട് തുവര, കടല, വെല്ലം, കല്ക്കകണ്ടം തുടങ്ങിയ പല വ്യജ്ഞനങ്ങള്‍ കച്ചവടം നടത്തി. തന്റെ മായയാല്‍ കടല ചെറുമണി ചരലായും, കല്ക്ക്ണ്ടി വെങ്കല്ലായും മറിച്ചു മീത്തലെ വീട്ടില്‍ പെരുമാള്ക്ക് ചുങ്കം വീഴ്ത്താന്‍ പണം കയ്യിലുണ്ടായിരിക്കെ വെളുത്തരി കൊണ്ട് ചുങ്കം വീഴ്ത്തി മായ കാണിച്ചു. കച്ചവടം കഴിഞ്ഞു മടങ്ങുന്ന വഴി രാത്രി ഘോരമായ ചെന്നികുത്ത് വന്ന് കയ്യിലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ചൂട്ടും നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടു. കണ്ണ് കാണാതായി വഴി പിഴച്ച് പെരുമ്പുഴയാറ്റില്‍ വീണു മരണപ്പെട്ടു. പിറ്റേന്ന് മീന്‍ പിടിക്കാന്‍ പോയ ഒരു വള്ളുവന് ദേവനെ വലയില്‍ കിട്ടി. അതോടു കൂടി വള്ളുവന്റെ വീട്ടില്‍ പല ദൃഷ്ടാന്തങ്ങളും കണ്ടു തുടങ്ങി. ജ്യോത്സരെ വരുത്തി നോക്കിയപ്പോള്‍ ഇതൊരു സാധാരണ മനുഷ്യനല്ലെന്നും കുലം കാക്കാന്‍ പോന്നൊരു ദൈവമാണ് എന്ന് കണ്ടു. അങ്ങിനെ വള്ളുവന്മാനരുടെ കുലദൈവമായി മാറിയെന്നും അവര്‍ പയംകുറ്റി, ഇറച്ചി, മത്സ്യം എന്നിവ നൈവേദ്യമായി നല്കു്കയും കോലസ്വരൂപം കെട്ടിയാടിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തുവെന്നാണ് മറ്റൊരു ഐതിഹ്യം.
The theyyam is annually performed at Malur Aryaparambu Sree Koottakkalam temple in Mattannur (April 3 to April 5), Kannur Kalliyasseri Perumpuzhayachan temple (December 24 to December 25), Mattannur Kara Perincheri Vengalotu Daivatharkandi Bhagavathi temple (April 29 - 30), Mattannur Sivapuram Kannothu Thahzathuveedu (Feb 21 - 22) and Kannur Iritty Makkuttam Kakkathodu Bhagavathy Temple (Dec 22 to December 23).
