Payyampally Chandu Theyyam – Story – Information

Payyampally Chandu Theyyam is a rare theyyam performed during the annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival in Kannur region of Kerala. As per information, he was a great warrior and able general but also a double agent. As per Payyamballi Chandu theyyam story, Pazhaya Veetil Chandu Nambiar also known as Pazhayamviden Chandu, lived during the 18th century CE and was a general of Pazhassi Raja whose betrayal led to death of Raja and British victory in Cotiote War.

This theyyam holds a sword and shield. He performs certain actions associated with warriors.

Payyamballi Chandu Theyyam is annually performed at Kadirur Chozhan Rayarorath Payyamvalli temple (Jan 24 and Jan 25) and Kadavathur Sree Palathayi Kunnu Bhagavathy temple (March 6 to March 8).
