Payattiyaal Bhagavathy Theyyam – Story – Information

Payattiyaal Bhagavathy Theyyam (പയറ്റിയാൽ ഭഗവതി തെയ്യം) is a rare ferocious Mother Goddess Kali theyyam worshipped in a few kavu, tharavadu and temples during the annual theyyam, thira, kaliyattam festival in Kannur region of North Kerala. As per information, this is a ferocious form of Goddess Bhagavathy. As per Payattiyaal Bhagavathy theyyam story, she appeared to defeat demons but her uncontrollable fury caused disturbance in the region. She had also given darshan to an ardent devotee. She was given a proper place of worship and a theyyam is performed annually to keep her calm and benign.

She is worshipped to defeat enemies, for early cure from communicable diseases and for desire fulfillment.

The theyyam has a unique appearance and is ferocious in nature.

The theyyam can be witnessed annually at Padinharekkara Edakkal Sree Vishnumurthy Devasthanam temple at Kanhangad (Nov 17 and Nov 18), Thaliparamba Panniyoor Payattiyal Bhagavathy temple (December 8 to 10), Edakkaal Sree Vishnumurthy Devasthanam temple (Nov 17 and Nov 18), Kannur Kuppam Mukkunnu Sree Payattiyal Bhagavathy temple (Jan 6 to Jan 9), and Kannur Mavicheri Sree Payattiyal Bhagavathy temple.
