Muthappan Theyyam is a popular theyyam performed in many kavu, tharavadu and temples during the annual theyam thira kaliyattam festival in Kannur region of Kerala. As per information this theyyam is associated with the famous Parassinikadavu Muthappan temple. As per Muthappan story, once there lived a couple named Ayyangara Devan Namboodiri and Parvati Kutti (Padikutti in local dialect). They belonged to the Eruvasseri Aiyangara Illam near Payyavoor in North Kerala. The couple led an unhappy life as they did not have any children.
To have a child, the couple intensely worshipped the
Kirathamoorthy in Payyavoor. One midnight Kiratha Shiva appeared before Parvati
Kutti and told her that she will be blessed with a child very soon. The next
day she went to take bath in Eruvasheri River. She heard an unusual sound of
anklet in the place. She took dip three times in the river. When she came out
of the river, she saw a baby atop a rock moving his hands and legs and playing.
She could not believe her eyes and her happiness knew no bounds. She picked up
the baby and took her to her home. The rock in which the baby was found came to
be known as Terunettikallu.
But as the child grew up, he began to venture into the
forest and mingled with people whom Brahmins did not mingle with. He began to
hunt animals and birds and eat them. He got hunted animals to the house and
started roasting them. Other Brahmins of the area began to ridicule the couple.
People in the house started to scold the boy especially his father. One day fed
up with the scolding, the boy produced a third eye in his forehead and in anger
looked around the house. All the trees and plants in the vicinity got burnt
down. Parvati Kutti realized that her son is no human being but the avatar of
Keerta Murthy Shiva that she was worshipping. The boy told his mother that it
is time for him to bid adieu from the house. He then left for Kunnathurpadi
Mountain.
One day Muthappan climbed up a palm tree and stole and drank
some toddy. Enraged at this, Chandan took his bow and narrow and attacked
Muthappan. Muthappan looked at him with his divine eyes and he immediately
turned into a stone. Wife of Chandan came searching for her husband and found
him in the form of a stone. She let out a wild cry calling, ‘Oh, my Muthappa…’
She promised to make various offerings to get back her husband. The word
‘Muthappan’ was first pronounced by this woman devotee.
അയ്യങ്കര ഇല്ലത്ത് വാഴുന്നവർ എന്ന നാടുവാഴിക്ക് കുട്ടികൾ ഇല്ലായിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പത്നിയായ പാടിക്കുറ്റി അന്തർജ്ജനം ശിവഭക്തയായിരുന്നു. ശിവന് ബലിയായി അവർ പലതും അർപ്പിച്ചു. ഒരുദിവസം സ്വപ്നത്തിൽ അന്തർജ്ജനം ശിവനെ കണ്ടു. പിറ്റേദിവസം അടുത്തുള്ള ഒരു അരുവിയിൽ കുളിച്ച് കയറി വരവേ അവർ ഒരു കുഞ്ഞ് പൂമെത്തയിൽ കിടക്കുന്നതു കണ്ടു. കുട്ടിയെ എടുത്ത് വീട്ടിലേക്കു കൊണ്ടുവന്ന് അവർ സ്വന്തം മകനെപ്പോലെ വളർത്തിത്തുടങ്ങി. ഈ കുട്ടി ഇവരുടെ മനയ്ക്ക് അടുത്തുള്ള കാട്ടിൽ അമ്പും വില്ലുമെടുത്ത് വേട്ടയ്ക്കു പോകുന്നത് പതിവായിരുന്നു. താഴ്ന്ന ജാതിക്കാരുമൊത്ത് ഈ കുട്ടി ഭക്ഷണം കഴിക്കുമായിരുന്നു. ഇതു രണ്ടും നമ്പൂ‍തിരി ആചാരങ്ങൾക്ക് എതിരായതിനാൽ മാതാപിതാക്കൾ കുട്ടിയോട് ഇവ നിറുത്തുവാൻ അഭ്യർത്ഥിച്ചു. പക്ഷേ ഈ അഭ്യർത്ഥന കുട്ടി ചെവിക്കൊണ്ടില്ല. അയ്യങ്കര വാഴുന്നവർ ഇതിൽ വളരെ നിരാ‍ശനായി. ഒരു ദിവസം കുട്ടി അവന്റെ മാതാപിതാക്കളുടെ അടുത്തെത്തി അമ്പും വില്ലുമെടുത്ത് തീക്കണ്ണുകളോടെ തന്റെ വിശ്വരൂപം കാണിച്ചു. മാതാപിതാക്കൾക്ക് ഇത് ഒരു സാധാരണ കുട്ടി അല്ലെന്നും ദൈവമാണെന്നും മനസ്സിലായി. അവർ അവന്റെ മുൻപിൽ സാഷ്ടാംഗം നമസ്കരിച്ചു. കുട്ടി അവരെ അനുഗ്രഹിച്ചു. ഇതിനു ശേഷം ദൈവം അയ്യങ്കരയിലേക്ക് യാത്രയായി. പക്ഷേ കുന്നത്തൂരിന്റെ പ്രകൃതി സൗന്ദര്യം കണ്ട് ദൈവം അവിടെ തങ്ങുവാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചു. പനമരങ്ങളിലെ കള്ള് കണ്ട് ദൈവം ആകൃഷ്ടനായി.
നിരക്ഷരനായ
ചന്ദൻ എന്ന കള്ള് ചെത്തുകാരൻ
തന്റെ പനമരങ്ങളിൽ നിന്ന് എന്നും രാത്രി കള്ള് മോഷണം പോവുന്നതായി കണ്ടുപിടിച്ചു. അങ്ങനെ പനകൾക്ക് കാവൽ കിടക്കുവാൻ ചന്ദൻ
തീരുമാനിച്ചു. അങ്ങനെ കാവൽ കിടക്കവേ ഒരു
വൃദ്ധൻ പനയിൽ നിന്ന് തന്റെ കള്ള് മോഷ്ടിക്കുന്നതായി ചന്ദൻ കണ്ടുപിടിച്ചു. തന്റെ അമ്പും വില്ലുമെടുത്ത് ഈ വൃദ്ധനെ പനമരത്തിൽ
നിന്ന് എയ്തിടാൻ ചന്ദൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചു. അമ്പു തൊടുക്കവേ ചന്ദൻ ബോധരഹിതനായി നിലത്തുവീണു. ഭർത്താവിനെ തിരക്കി വന്ന ചന്ദന്റെ ഭാര്യ
അദ്ദേഹം ബോധരഹിതനായി നിലത്തു കിടക്കുന്നതു കണ്ട് നിലവിളിച്ചു. മുകളിലേക്കു നോക്കിയ അവർ മരത്തിനു മുകളിൽ
ഒരു വൃദ്ധനെ കണ്ട് ഒരു അപ്പൂപ്പനെ എന്ന
പോലെ മുത്തപ്പാ എന്ന് വിളിച്ചു. ദൈവത്തോട് തന്റെ ഭർത്താവിനെ രക്ഷിക്കാൻ അവർ പ്രാർത്ഥിച്ചു. പിന്നാലെ
അവരുടെ ഭർത്താവിന് ബോധം തിരിച്ചുവന്നു.
അവർ
മുത്തപ്പന് പുഴുങ്ങിയ ധാന്യങ്ങളും തേങ്ങാപ്പൂളും ചുട്ട മീനും കള്ളും നൈവേദ്യമായി അർപ്പിച്ചു. മുത്തപ്പന്റെ അനുഗ്രഹം അവർ അഭ്യർത്ഥിച്ചു. ചന്ദന്റെ
ആഗ്രഹം അനുസരിച്ച് മുത്തപ്പൻ കുന്നത്തൂർ തന്റെ ഭവനമായി തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തു. ഇതാണ് പ്രശസ്തമായ കുന്നത്തൂർ പാടി. ഇന്നും മുത്തപ്പൻ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ വിശ്വാസികൾ പുഴുങ്ങിയ ധാന്യങ്ങളും തേങ്ങാപ്പൂളും നൈവേദ്യമായി അർപ്പിക്കുന്നു. കുന്നത്തൂരിൽ ഏതാനും വർഷങ്ങൾ താമസിച്ചതിനു ശേഷം മുത്തപ്പൻ തന്റെ
അവതാരത്തിന്റെ ലക്ഷ്യ പൂർത്തീകരണത്തിനായി കൂടുതൽ അനുയോജ്യമായ ഒരിടത്തേക്കു മാറുവാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചു. കുന്നത്തൂ പാടിയിൽ നിന്ന് ആകാശത്തേക്ക് മുത്തപ്പൻ ഒരു അമ്പ് തൊടുത്തുവിട്ടു.
ഈ അമ്പ് പറശ്ശിനിക്കടവിൽ വന്നു വീണു. ഇവിടെയാണ് പ്രശസ്റ്റമായ പറശ്ശിനിക്കടവ് മുത്തപ്പൻ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനടുത്തുള്ള തീർത്ഥത്തിൽ നിന്ന് പ്രകാശം ചൊരിഞ്ഞ ഈ അമ്പ് ഇന്ന്
പറശ്ശിനിക്കാവ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ഒരു അൾത്താരയിൽ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.
ഇതിനുശേഷം മുത്തപ്പൻ പറശ്ശിനിക്കടവിൽ വസിക്കുന്നു എന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം…
