Muthala theyyam is a unique and rare theyyam performed during the annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival in Kannur district of Kerala. As per information, this theyyam does not stand up and crawls like a crocodile around the temple or sacred place. As per Muthala theyyam story, this is the theyyam of Goddess Thripandarathamma. It is said that one day the pujari of Thripandaram did not arrive for daily puja. To avoid the non-performance of daily puja a crocodile brought to the temple a man named Adi Thoyadan, who was fishing in the river. Another version of the story has it that the pujari of the temple was unable to reach the shrine for lighting the evening lamp as the river was overflowing due to torrential rain. It is said that Thripandarathamma took the form of a crocodile and ferried the man across the turbulent river and the pujari was able to light the lamp.
Muthala theyyam is offered prayers to overcome problems related to reptiles and snakes.
The theyyam does not speak any words. The theyyam is usually
performed after the Pathamudayam in Thula Masam (October – November).
The theyyam is performed annually at Alakode Naduvil
Pothukundu Veerabhadra temple (October 25 to October 26).

മതിയെന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം.
തലയിലെ പാള എഴുത്തിനു തേള്‍,
പല്ലി, പാമ്പ്, പഴുതാര, ആമ തുടങ്ങിയ ഇഴ
ജീവികളെ വരച്ചതാണ്. കുരുത്തോലക്ക് പകരം കവുങ്ങിന്‍ ഓലയാണ് ഉടയാട. മുഖത്തെഴുത്തിന്
വട്ടക്കണ്ണ്‍, തലപ്പാട്ടി
ചെന്നിമലര്‍ മുടിയും കാണിമുണ്ട് ചുവപ്പുമാണ്.
