Moolampetta Bhagavathy Theyyam – Story – Information

Moolampetta Bhagavathy theyyam is a unique and rate theyyam seen during the annual theyyam, thira, kaliyattam festival in Kannur region of Kerala. As per information, this is a theyyam associated with Mother Goddess Shakti (Goddess Devi or Bhagavathy). There are numerous stories associated with Moolampetta Bhagavathy. As per one story, she was the wife of Vanavar of Ayyangara Illam. The name of the wife of Padikuttiamma and she gained the status of a Goddess through her devotion and selfless attitude. A theyyam is performed annually in her remembrance and to get her blessings.

Another legend has it that she resided in the region long before the arrival of humans. People also believe that She is a kind and benign form of Goddess Kali. Another belief is that She is Goddess Vanadurga and is the deity of Eruveshi village.

The headgear of Moolampetta Bhagavathy Theyyam is unique and is made of green leaves. The head gear is made using bamboo and banana leaves. The Thirumudi of the Goddess is green in color.

This theyyam can be witnessed at Kunnathoor Padi Muthappan Devasthanam in Kannur district from November 17 to November 18 annually.
