Story Of Demon Jalandharan And Vishnumaya Kuttichathan

Vishnumaya Kuttichathan was the son of Goddess Parvati and Shiva. He was blessed with immense power and could take the form of any living being or anything in the universe. He was asked to annihilate Demon Jalandharan by Shiva. This story is part of the Theyyam dance performance in North Kerala.

Demon Jalandharan was creating havoc in the universe with the aid of tremendous powers he got as boon. The demon conquered the three worlds and ruled over it mercilessly.

Vishnumaya Kuttichathan challenged Jalandharan and in the fight that followed the demon lost his army and had to run away from his palace.

Vishnumaya Kuttichathan took the form of Sudarshana Chakra (the discus of Vishnu) and followed Jalandharan.

Jalandharan hid under the ocean. The ocean started to boil when Sudarshana Chakra entered the ocean and started looking for the demon. The intense heat produced by the divine discus made the ocean uninhabitable. The demon had to come out of the ocean and he was killed Vishnumaya Kuttichathan in the form of Sudarshana Chakra.
