Parali Amma Theyyam – Story – Information

Parali Amma Theyyam is a Goddess theyyam seen in very few kavu, tharavadu and temple in Kannur region of Kerala during the annual kaliyattam koothu thira theyyam festival. As per information, this theyyam does not speak and other people speak on behalf of her. Parali Amma theyyam story is that of her killing a traveler who arrived at Thiruverkadu Bhagavathy Kavu temple. Parali Amma guarded the outside portion of the temple and she killed and ate the traveler who arrived at midnight in the temple seeking refuge. 

Thiruverkadu Bhagavathy got angry at the remorseless action of Parali Amma and pulled her tongue out and threw her and she fell at Aripambayil. She got an aaroodam or place of worship here.

Her theyyam is performed by Chingathanmar. She is believed to a Vanadevatha or forest deity.

Parali Amma theyyam is worshipped for overcoming fear of darkness, death and ghosts. It is believed that worshipping her will help in having a disease free and healthy life.

This theyyam is annually performed at Taliparamba Perumkunnapala tharavadu paraliyamma Bhagavathy temple, Kannur Kanhirangad Chavanapuzha Prayankottu Tharavad Devasthanam temple, Kannur Kunhimangalam Kuthirummal Mattummal Kalari Devasthanam temple and Kannur Kuttiattoor Chathoth Tharavad Devasthanam temple.
