Kattumoorthi Theyyam – Information – Story

Kattumoorthi Theyyam is a theyyam associated with gods of the forest. It is a very rare theyyam and is seen during the annual theyyam thira and kaliyattam festival in Kannur and Kasaragod districts of North Kerala. As per information, this is a ferocious forest deity and is part of nature worship. Kattumoorthi theyyam story is that of the deity causing problems to people and people giving the deity a place of worship to appease it. A theyyam is performed annually to keep the deity calm and happy.

The theyyam is worshipped for the protection of farm animals and agriculture. He is also invoked by those venturing into forest as part of their livelihood.

Kattumoorthi Theyyam wears a ferocious looking mask and holds green branches. The body is painted yellow using turmeric and other natural colors.
