Kathivanoor Veeran theyyam is a popular theyyam of a warrior worshipped during the annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival at several kavu, tharavadu, temples and devasthanam in Kannur region of Kerala. As per information, this theyyam defeated the Kodavas but they killed him through cheating and he became a daiva karu. The story of Kathivanoor Veeran theyyam begins with a child born to Kumarappan and Chakkiamma after long years of prayers. They lived at Mangattu. The child was named Mandappan. Mandappan grew up to be a strong man but he did not do any job. He wasted his time hunting with his friends. Fed up with his laziness, his father scolded him regularly. Fed up with his father’s scolding, he left home and decided to join his friends. But his friends were not ready to accept him as he did not do any work. They abandoned him.
Mandappan then decided to go to his uncle's house at Kathivanoor in Kodagu. His uncle and aunt welcomed him to their home and put him in a kalari to learn traditional martial art. He soon became an expert in Kalaripayattu.
Soon he met a girl named Chembarathi and they got married. But soon Chembarathi realized that her husband was lazy and he was not willing to do any work. This led to fight between the newlywed couple.
One day Mandappan got the news about the local Kodagu people attacking Malayalam speaking people. He immediately took his weapons and ran out of the house. While running out of the house his head hit the main door and blood fell on the ground. Chembarathi told her husband that this is a bad omen and he should not go to fight with the Kodava people. He ignored her warning. An angry Chembarathi cursed, Mandappan that he will be cut into sixty pieces by the enemy. Mandappan smiled and told his wife that let your curse be fulfilled. He then stormed out.
On his way, he met a relative of his and told him and if he gets killed in the battlefield all the banana that he had planted will give fruit on the same day itself.
Mandappan led the fight against Kodavas from the front and he defeated them. The news of Mandappan’s bravery made his wife, uncle and aunt happy. But the happiness was short lived as Manthappan who was returning home was killed by the Kodavas. They cut his body into 60 pieces. Chembarathi who heard about the tragic news jumped into his pyre and died.
The same day the entire banana planted by Mandappan gave fruits. It is said that even after getting cut into pieces each body part moved as if to fight back. The great warrior was named Kathivanoor Veeran and made a daiva karu and given a proper place in many kavu, tharavadu and temples.
Kathivanoor Veeran theyyam performance involves numerous physical movements. The theyyam depicts several actions of a warrior. The theyyam is usually performed at night. A pyre is kept burning during the performance. Plantains are used in theyyam and they represent the enemies and Kathivanoor Veeran theyyam chops it down to enact him killing the enemy.
യുദ്ധം ജയിച്ചു വന്ന മന്ദപ്പന്‍ തിരികെ വീട്ടിലേക്കുള്ള വഴിമധ്യേ തന്റെ പീഠമോതിരവും ചെറു വിരലും പോരിനിടയില്‍ നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടത് മനസ്സിലാക്കിയ മന്ദപ്പന്‍ അത് വീണ്ടെടുക്കാന്‍ തിരിയേ പോവുകയും ഒളിച്ചിരുന്ന കുടകിലെ പോരാളികള്‍ ചതിയില്‍ മന്ദപ്പനെ വെട്ടിനുറുക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
മന്ദപ്പനെ കാത്ത ചെമ്മരത്തിക്ക് കഥളി വാഴ കൈയ്യില്‍ പീഠമോതിരവും ചെറു വിരലും വന്നു വീണതാണ് കണ്ടത്.
തന്റെ ഭര്ത്താ വിനു നേരിട്ട ദുര്യോഗത്തില്‍ വലഞ്ഞ ചെമ്മരത്തി ചിതയില്‍ ചാടി ജീവനൊടുക്കി.
അമ്മാവനും മകന്‍ അണ്ണൂക്കനും ശവസംസ്കാരം കഴിഞു മടങ്ങവെ ദൈവക്കരുവായി മാറിയ മന്ദപ്പനെയും ചെമ്മരത്തിയെയും തൊറം കണ്ണാലെ കണ്ടു വെളിപാടുണ്ടായി ഉറഞ്ഞു തുള്ളി.
അമ്മാവന്റെ സാന്നിധ്യത്തില്‍ മന്ദപ്പന്റെ കോലം കെട്ടിയാടിച്ചു. അമ്മാവന്‍ അരിയിട്ട് കതിവന്നൂര്‍ വീരന്‍ എന്ന് പേരിട്ടു.
പടയ്ക്കിറങ്ങുമ്പോള്‍ തന്റെ മച്ചുനനോടു താന്‍ മരിച്ചു വീര സ്വര്ഗംോ പൂകിയാല്‍ താന്‍ വച്ച എല്ലാ വാഴയും അന്ന് തന്നെ കുലയ്ക്കുമെന്നു മന്ദപ്പന്‍ പറഞ്ഞിരുന്നു. അത് പോലെ സംഭാവിക്കുകയും വീരനായ അവനെ ദൈവകരുവായി കണ്ടു കതിവന്നൂര്‍ പടിഞ്ഞാറ്റയില്‍ ആരാധിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
ചടുലമായ പദചലനവും മെയ് വഴക്കവും ഉള്ള ഈ തെയ്യത്തിന് വേണ്ടി തയ്യാറാക്കിയ വാഴപ്പോളകള്‍ കൊണ്ടു പ്രത്യേകം തയ്യാറാക്കിയ ചെമ്മരത്തി തറ ശ്രദ്ദേയമാണ്.
അതിനു ചുറ്റുമാണ് ഈ തെയ്യം നൃത്തം വെക്കുക. അത് ചെമ്മരത്തിയാണ് എന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം.
സമചതുരാകൃതിയില്‍ കഴുത്തിനോപ്പം ഉയരത്തില്‍ വാഴപ്പോളകൊണ്ട് ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്ന കമനീയ കലാരൂപമാണ്‌ ചെമ്മരത്തിത്തറ.
ഇതേ വാഴപ്പോള ത്തറ തന്നെ കുടകപ്പടയായി സങ്കല്പം ചെയ്തു മന്ദപ്പന്‍ കൈവാള് കൊണ്ട് തുണ്ടം തുണ്ടമായി വെട്ടിയിടുന്നതും അതെ പടയില്‍ മരിച്ച് വീഴുന്ന കാഴ്ചയും കാണികളില്‍ കഥാപരിസമാപ്തി അനുഭവഭേദ്യമാക്കും.
