Karivedan Theyyam – Information – Story

Karivedan Theyyam is a popular theyyam performed in Kannur and Kasaragod regions of North Kerala during the annual theyyam, thira and kaliyattam festival. As per information, this theyyam is that of a hunter or one who protects livestock. Karivedan theyyam story is that of him venturing into forest to defeat a supernatural being and ferocious wild animal. In the process he gets killed. As per some counts, this theyyam is also propitiated so that he does not harm farm animals. He was honored with a theyyam so that he does not cause harm to people. In some kavu is honored for his great sacrifice.

The theyyam is usually performed at night and is noted by its dark body hue.

This theyyam is offered prayers for finding lost animals. He is also propitiated by people who go on dangerous mission and by those who want to take revenge or defeat enemies.

This theyyam is annual performed at Narikode Naduvalath Sastha temple, Azhikode Moonunirath Pacha Tharavad Sree Vayanattu Kulavan temple, Kannur Mavilayi Mundayod Sree Koodan Gurukkanmmar Kavu temple, Irikkur Blathur Thazhe Pallyath Bhairavan Kottam temple (January 6 to January 8), Kannur Edakkadu Kakkanam Kottam Devi temple, Cherukunnu Kavinisseri Muchilottu Bhagavathy Kavu temple (December 7 to December 10), Kannur Chembilode Thachukunnummal Mahadevi temple and numerous other kavu, devasthanam and temples.
