Kandanum Puliyum Theyyam – Information – Story

Kandanum Puliyum theyyam is a rare twin theyyam seen during the annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival in Kannur region of Kerala. As per information, this theyyam is in remembrance of a person who sacrificed his life while saving cows and other livestock from the attack of a tiger or leopard. The story of Kandanum Puliyum theyyam is that of a person killing a tiger which was attacking and killing farm animals in a region. The person sacrifices his life in trying to protect livestock. The person was made a daiva karu and was given a theyyam. This theyyam is associated with agriculture and farming.

The theyyam is offered prayers for protection of wealth and property. Farmers offer prayers for good harvest, for good health of livestock and for an incident free rainy season.

Kandanum Puliyum Theyyam is performed annually from April 4 to April 5 at Kadirur Pullyode Valiyapurayil Sree Bhagavathi temple in Kannur.
