Kallurutti Theyyam – Information – Story

Kallurutti Theyyam is a unique and very rare theyyam seen during the annual theyyam kaliyattam and thira festival in Kasaragod region of Kerala. As per information, this theyyam is based on rural folklore and incorporated into theyyam. Kallurutti theyyam story is associated with a person attaining the status of semi-divine being.


The theyyam has unique small head gear and the body is decorated with tender coconut leaves. Face is colored black suggesting direct connection with earth and people who make a living by farming and are close to nature.

Kallurutti Theyyam is performed at Bovikkanam Kanathur Vadakkekara Panjuruli Vishnumurthy Devasthanam temple in Kasaragod (March 17 to March 20) and Mangalore Jappukudupadi Vishnumurthy Aadi Kshetram (March 3 to March 7).
