Kalaratri Bhagavathy Theyyam – Story – Information

Kalaratri Bhagavathy theyyam is a ferocious kolam performed during the annual theyyam, thira, kaliyattam festival in Kannur and Kasaragod region of Kerala. As per information, Kalarathri Bhagavathy is the fierce manifestation of Mother Goddess (Durga or Bhagavathi or Kali). Kalarathri Bhagavathy story is that of her appearing to lick the blood of demon Raktabija from whose blood drops appeared thousands of demons.

It is believed that Kalarathri Bhagavathy appeared to help a devotee (family) in distress. She protects the wealth and livestock of her devotees. She is so ferocious that she is given a separate place in temples and kavu. A theyyam is performed in all those place where she appeared.

Kalarathri Bhagavathy theyyam is worshipped to defeat enemies and to overcome fear of darkness and ghosts. She is also propitiated by those who have trouble in sleeping.

This theyyam is performed at Kanhangad Madiyan Koolom temple, Valapattanam Sree Kalarivaathukkal Bhagavathy Kavu temple, Kannur Azhikode Valapattanam Kalariyal Bhagavathy temple, Kannur Mathamangalam Kaithapram Edamana Illam, Kasaragod Kuttikkol Thamburatti Bhagavathi temple.
