Kalanthan Mukri Theyyam – Story – Information - Muslim Theyyam

Kalanthan Mukri theyyam is a rare Muslim theyyam part of the annual theyyam thira kaliyattam festival in Kasaragod region of Kerala. As per information, the theyyam is that of a person who lived in olden times but faced an unnatural death for venturing in the forest of Goddess Chamundi. Kalanthan Mukkri theyyam story is that of him venturing into the sacred forest of Goddess Chamundi to cut tree. The Goddess kills him by felling a tree on him. As he was killed inside a kavu, he became a daivakaru and theyyam. It is said that Goddess gave him a place in the kavu and honored him with a theyyam.


Another story is that Kalanthan Mukri hunting for fish in a sacred place in a river associated with Goddess Chamundi. At midnight she causes hallucination and makes Kalanthan Mukri to swim across the river many times. He is finally captured and taken away by Goddess Chamundi.

Kalanthan Mukri Theyyam is performed at Chittarikkal Kamballur Kottayil Tharavadu Devasthanam temple in Kasaragod from October 27 to October 28.
