Kakkunnathu Bhagavathy Theyyam – Information – Story

Kakkunnathu Bhagavathy theyyam is a violent Mother Goddess Kali theyyam performed during annual Kaliyattam, theyyam, thira festival in couple of kavu, tharavadu and temples in Kannur region of Kerala. As per information, this theyyam is a manifestation of Mother Goddess Bhagavathi or Devi and is believed to have appeared before an elderly member of the family. The story of Kakkunnathu Bhagavathy theyyam is that of her making her aaroodam or home in the house of a tantri and helping in defeating enemies. Through the power of the Devi the tantri is able to perform miracles.

Kakkunnathu Bhagavathy theyyam is worshipped to overcome fear of darkness, ghost and supernatural beings. She is worshipped for success in life and to get early job. Couples worship her for having health children.

The theyyam is performed at Anjarakandy Kakkothu Kakkunnath Bhagavathy temple in Kannur from March 31 to April 2 annually.

The Bhagavathi is has her face painted black suggesting she is a manifestation of Goddess Kali. Her mudi is unusually huge.
