Palottu Theyyam, or Palottu Daivam, (പാലോട്ട് ദൈവം or പാലോട്ട് തെയ്യം) is a powerful theyyam performed during the annual theyyam – thira festival in Kannur district of Kerala. As per information, Palottu theyyam is based on the Matsya avatar of Bhagavan Vishnu. The Palottu Theyyam story is associated with fishermen getting a symbol of Matsya avatar from sea.
This theyyam is performed by Peruvannam, who takes vratam before performing it. This theyyam is usually performed only in Palottu Kavu. This theyyam is performed by Vannan community.
The popular belief is that Bhagavan Mahavishnu was resting atop Ananta Sesha in the milky ocean. He gave permission to Goddess Ganga to remove his crown. The crown was placed in milky ocean and it starting floating. It finally reached the seashore near Azhikode.
The crown got stuck in the fishing net of Chakottu Theeyan and his friend Perum Thattan. The unusually beautiful crown was decorated with precious stones. They gave the crown to Kolathiri king. King, courtiers and the people present in the court were awe struck by the crown. Suddenly Sheetikandan Theeyan and and Perum Thattan started to dance in trance. An astrologer informed the king that the crown by a symbol of divinity. It was decided to worship the crow as Palazhikottu theyyam.
Yet another story has it that three friends – Nair, Theeyan and Kathiyan – went to Azhikode beach to fish. They caught an unusually big fish and when they tried to cut it into three pieces atop the Oladan hill, the fish disappeared. Oracle and astrologer later confirmed that the fish was Matsya Avatar of Vishnu.
The Kavu or temples that perform Palottu theyyam are Kannur Keecheri Sree Palottu Kavu, Kannur Azhikode Sree Palottu Kavu,Kannur Kunhimangalam Malliyot Palot Kavu and Kallyasseri Keecheri Sri Palotu Kavu.
അണ്ടലൂര്‍ കാവ്, കീച്ചേരി പാലോട്ട് കാവ്, മാവിലക്കാവ്, മേച്ചേരി കാവ്, അതിയിടത്ത് കാവ്, കുഞ്ഞിമംഗലത്ത് മല്ലിയോട്ട് കാവ് എന്നിവിടങ്ങളില്‍ പാലോട്ട് ദൈവം എഴുന്നെള്ളിയത്രെ. വൈഷ്ണവ സങ്കല്പ്പ ത്തിലുള്ള പാലോട്ട് ദൈവം തന്നെയാണ് ഈ കാവുകളിലോക്കെ ആരാധിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്. ഇവ കൂടാതെ കമ്മാള വിഭാഗം നടത്തുന്ന പാലോട്ട് കാവാണ്‌ നീലേശ്വരം പാലോട്ട് കാവ്. എല്ലാ വിഷുവിനും ഈ തെയ്യങ്ങള്‍ കെട്ടിയാടും. വിഷു നാള്‍ തൊട്ടു ഏഴു നാളുകളിലായാണ് പാലോട്ട് കാവുകളില്‍ ഉത്സവം അരങ്ങേറുക.
പാലോട്ട് തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ കൂടെയുള്ള തെയ്യക്കോലമാണ്‌ ‘കൂടെയുള്ളോര്‍ തെയ്യം’. വടക്കെ മലബാറിലെ അഞ്ച് കഴകങ്ങളിലും ഈ തെയ്യം കേട്ടിയാടുന്നുണ്ട്. ആ കഴകങ്ങള്‍ ഇവയാണ് നീലേശ്വരം തട്ടാചേരി പാലോട്ട് കാവ്, കീച്ചേരി പാലോട്ട് കാവ്, അഴീക്കോട് പാലോട്ട് കാവ്, അതിയടം പാലോട്ട് കാവ്, മല്ലിയോട്ട് പാലോട്ട് കാവ്.
