Chembilottu Bhagavathy Theyyam is a rare theyyam performed during the annual Kaliyattam – theyyam thira festival in Kasaragod and Kannur region of Kerala. As per information Chembilot Bhagavathy is a manifestation of Mother Goddess Shakti (Goddess Kali). The story of Chembilottu Bhagavathy is that of her appearing to defeat demons. She drove away evil doers and protected the wealth, livestock and life of her devotees.
As per Chembilottu Bhagavathy theyyam story, this is the
eight-arm form of Goddess Bhagavathi. She has just chopped the head of
Darikasuran and she is performing Tandava dance. The entire universe is
trembling and earth will be soon shattered into two pieces. Shiva tries to stop
the dance of Goddess Devi by lying on her path. To save earth, Shiva forms the
bed for Goddess to dance. It is believed that she appeared in this form in a
tharavadu and found a place of worship. She blesses devotees in this form.
She is also known by numerous other names including Thai Paradevatha and Thiruverkadu Bhagavathi.
Chembilottu Bhagavathy theyyam appears in a ferocious form and she holds a sword and a shield.
Chembilottu Daivam theyyam is performed at the Chandera Chembilot Bhagavathy temple in Kasaragod district and at Taliparamba Naduvil Ayyappa – Vanadurga Temple.
