Aryappoonkanni Theyyam is a Bhagavathi theyyam performed in many temples, kavu and tharavadu in Kannur and Kasaragod districts. As per information, this theyyam is believed to have arrived from Aryiyar land via sea. Aryappoonkanni theyyam begins with she and her brothers venturing out into the sea for finding more pearls for her marriage.
Aaryappoonkanni was the daughter of Aryapattar and Arya Pattathi who lived in the Ariykara Narukayam. She was a virgin goddess. When there was not enough pearls for her marriage, she and her brothers went in search of it on marakkalam (type of boat). The boat capsized during a storm and the brothers and sister got separated. She floated aimlessly for seven days and reached land of the eighth day.
She moved along the shore searching for her brothers. Aaryappoonkanni then happened to see Bappooran, a Muslim boat man, was traveling in his boat. When she asked him to help her in locating her brothers, Bappooran teased her and told her if she can walk to his boat over the water then he will help her. An angry Aryappoonkanni then chanted a mantra that she had received from Goddess Ganga and she hit the water with a cane. Suddenly the water parted ways till the boat. Aryapponkani walked and reached the boat. Bappooran realized the divinity of the girl before him and decided to help her.
She locates her brothers at Venmalayatin Kara but they had decided to stay there. Aryappoonkanni then moves ahead along with Bappooran and she sits in a couple of places and they have become associated with her divinity. Finally she disappears at Kooran Kunnu.

- അങ്ങനെ കൂരാങ്കുന്നിൽ ആര്യപൂങ്കന്നിയമ്മയ്ക്ക് സ്ഥാനം ലഭിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ഒരു ക്ഷേത്രമുയർന്നു.
- ഭഗവതിയുടെ ആരൂഢ സ്ഥാനമായി അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത് കൂരാങ്കുന്ന് ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രമാണ്.
- വൈദിക രീതിയിലാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൻ്റെ ആരാധന സമ്പ്രദായം.
- ചുറ്റമ്പലത്തോടു കൂടിയ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ അകത്ത് ബ്രാഹ്മണരുടെ നിത്യപൂജയും പുറത്ത് കളിയാട്ടവുമാണ് നടക്കാറുള്ളത്.
ഭഗവതി കൂരാങ്കുന്നിൽ നിന്നും മറ്റു ദേശങ്ങളിലേക്കും എഴുന്നള്ളി അവിടങ്ങളിൽ സ്ഥാനം നേടിയെന്നാണ് പുരാവൃത്തം.
കീച്ചേരി ചിറകുറ്റി പുതിയ കാവിലാണ് ആര്യപൂങ്കന്നി രണ്ടാമതായി എത്തിച്ചേർന്നതെന്നാണ് വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്.
തളിപ്പറമ്പിനടുത്ത കോക്കുന്നം ഇല്ലത്തെ ബ്രാഹ്മണൻ്റെ വെള്ളോലക്കുടയാധാരമായി വെള്ളാവ് ദേശത്തെത്തിയ ഭഗവതി ആ ബ്രാഹ്മണ ഗൃഹത്തിൽ സാന്നിധ്യം ചെയ്തത്രേ. എന്നാൽ ഇവിടെ കൈതക്കീൽ ഭഗവതി എന്ന പേരിലാണ് ഭഗവതി അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. കണ്ണൂർ, തലശ്ശേരി ഭാഗങ്ങളിലും ആര്യപൂങ്കന്നിയെ കെട്ടിയാടിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.

- ആര്യപ്പൂങ്കന്നിയുടെ പുറപ്പാട് തെയ്യക്കാഴ്ച്ചകളിൽ വളരെ വ്യത്യസ്തവും മനോഹരവുമായ ഒന്നാണ്.
- പുറപ്പാട് സമയത്ത് ഭഗവതിയുടെ തിരുമുടി മറച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടാകും.
- മുഖം മറച്ച് കൈയിൽ ശരക്കോലും വാൽക്കണ്ണാടിയുമേന്തി കാലിൽ മെതിയടി ധരിച്ച് കുലീനയായ ഒരു യുവതിയെപ്പോലെയാണ് ഭഗവതിയുടെ പുറപ്പാട് ഉണ്ടാവുക.
- ഭഗവതിക്ക് മുച്ചിലോട്ട് ഭഗവതിയോട് സാദൃശ്യമുള്ള രൂപമാണ്.
- എന്നാൽ കണ്ണൂർ ഭാഗത്ത് ഇതിൽ നിന്നും വ്യത്യസ്തമായ രൂപത്തിലാണ് ഭഗവതിയെ കെട്ടിയാടാറുള്ളത്. ഐതീഹ്യത്തെ അനുസ്മരിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് ആര്യപൂങ്കന്നിയെ കെട്ടിയാടുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളിൽ മുഹമ്മദീയനായ ബപ്പിരിയൻ്റേയും തെയ്യക്കോലം കെട്ടിയാടാറുണ്ട്.
- വണ്ണാന്‍ സമുദായമാണ് ഈ തെയ്യം കെട്ടിയാടുന്നത്‌.
- ഒരു ബ്രാഹ്മണൻ്റെ വെള്ളോലക്കുടയാധാരമായി ദേവി കൂരാങ്കുന്നിൽ നിന്നും മറ്റു ദേശങ്ങളിലേക്കും എഴുന്നള്ളിയെന്നാണ് പുരാവൃത്തം.
